To the gypsies

If I had to pick one song to represent my life, it would be Fleetwood Mac’s “Gypsy.”

Stevie Nicks sings to the gypsy she used to be, her old self. It’s a reminiscent song that captures how people evolve through life yet, in some ways, remain the same.

The song is on the A-side of “Mirage,” Fleetwood Mac’s 13th studio album. Mirage is defined as something that you hope for or want but that is not possible or real, according to merriam-webster.com.

It’s one of my favorite album titles, because I think it fits so many people’s approach toward life.

“Mirage” has a soft sound, enchanted with xylophone accompaniments and medium-paced melodies. It makes for extremely easy listening.

The album is often compared to Fleetwood Mac’s 11th album, “Rumours.” The two albums are equal in my opinion, made for different listening experiences at different times.

“Love In Store” and “Hold Me” are classic pop tracks addressing love’s resiliency and importance. “Can’t Go Back,” “Wish You Were Here” and “That’s Alright” are the songs’ tragic counterparts.

When I flip to the B-side, my heart stops at the beginning of “Empire State.” It breathes a different air into the album.

The album resumes its ethereal pretenses with “Straight Back.”

The cover art is dark and artsy, so I paired this album with a similar ensemble.

This fall look combines a dark purple corduroy suspender skirt with a black ribbed turtleneck. The lace-up black heels and medium-brim fedora add a theatrical touch.

The album and outfit are a tribute to the dreamer.

Although I listen to the record in order, I somehow always end up back on “Gypsy.” Whereas every other song on the album is a mirage, this one is more a self-reflection.

I don’t think I have fully left the gypsy, to which I will someday return. For now, I’m satisfied singing every lyric and imitating the quick-paced guitar strums at the song’s end.

“To the gypsy that remains

She faces freedom

With a little fear

I have no fear

I have only love”
