In an emergency situation, you better save the women and children first.

Listen to David Lee Roth’s advice in “Could This Be Magic?,” a track from the 1980 Van Halen record “Women and Children First.” I wouldn’t dare disagree with the lead singer of such a rockin’ band.

The record leads with “And the Cradle Will Rock,” the epitome of a Van Halen song and easily the most popular track. The song is known for its distinct intro, a guitar sound not made using a a Wurlitzer electric piano.

Who said keyboards couldn’t be cool?

“Everybody Wants Some!!” is one of my favorites. I get amped hearing the drums in the intro, and the song is worth the hype.

Brothers Eddie Van Halen, guitarist, and Alex Van Halen, drummer, will go down in history for their strength as a rock’ n’ roll duo.

“And the Cradle Will Rock” and “Everybody Wants Some!!” are the album’s two singles. If you ever compile a 1980s rock playlist, it would be a crime to leave these songs out.

If you have a chance, take a moment to appreciate all the YouTube comments for the songs on this album. I love hearing people share how the record transports them back to high school days, when they jammed out to Van Halen in their first vehicles.

I approach Van Halen as I do all the epic rock bands such as Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath: with respect. Nothing but respect.

I think there are a lot of underrated hits on the record such as “Romeo Delight,” with its impeccable timing and “Take Your Whiskey Home” with its blues intro. In my opinion, it’s the baddest intro on the record by a landslide.

I paired “Women and Children First” with a lace top a similar color as the album art. The teal shade of blue makes me think of the high seas, not unrelated to the lyrics of “Could This Be Magic?”

And I see lonely ships upon the water

Better save the women and children first

Sail away with someone’s daughter

Better save the women and children first

The song always reminds me of the Titanic. It’s customary to evacuate women and children from a sinking ship first.
