“Alternate Mirage” is an alternate universe of Fleetwood Mac with the men on the front of the album sleeve and Lindsey Buckingham sandwiched by the women on the back.
Reversing the original album art is a playful look at “Mirage” before it was “Mirage.”
The collection of “Mirage” outtakes was part of my haul of exclusive releases from FWB Vintage Records on Record Store Day 2017. It was on my to-score list with a few other treasures including Stevie Nicks’ “Rarities.”
“Alternate Mirage” features early versions of “Gypsy,” “Hold Me,” “Oh Diane” and “Book of Love” along with alternate versions of other tracks and the original album version of “Straight Back.”
One of the biggest differences between alternate universe Fleetwood Mac and reality Fleetwood Mac is speed. The pace was often a tad slower or drastically faster on the completed record.
For diehards, it’s a great chance to indulge in stripped-down, coffee-shop “Mirage” hits while immersing yourself in analyzing the group’s musical process.
My takeaways: “Book of Love,” was missing a bit of the oomph on Tell me who, “Suma’s Walk,” was a delicate instrumental version of “Can’t Go Back” and the early version of “Love in Store” was slower and sans background vocals from Nicks and Buckingham until its last 30 seconds.
The bare bones of the record, however, are not so different. Recording studio magic clearly didn’t play an overwhelming role in “Mirage’s” success. The skeleton of Fleetwood Mac's 13th record was well-endowed.
In my photo shoot, I wear a “Mermaids Don’t Cry” T-shirt with vertical-striped pants and platform heels. This look channels the same ultra-feminine power that gave Fleetwood Mac its edge in the music industry.

Hey, I'm Savannah. I collect records, and they collect dust. Like my preferred media form, I strive to not become obsolete. I created Off the Record as a way to turn my mind inside out, into something visual and tangible. One is the loneliest number, so I asked my friends to join.
